The first step is to gather all the necessary documents, including your passport, birth certificate, health insurance and proof of income. For those who have lived in Turkey continuously for eight years and have not spent more than 120 days outside the country in 12 months, the long-term residence permit is the ideal option, while the short-term residence permit is valid for up to two years and does not require a passport valid for the duration of the permit plus 60 days. 


Finally, the Family Residence Permit is available for families with children under the age of 18 and has no limit on the number of children that can be admitted. The passport must be valid for the duration of the permit plus 60 days. To extend your stay in Turkey, you need to visit the website https://e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr to find out which extension is applicable for you. You can use the option ''Request for extension'' and send the required application forms or visit your local Ikamet office if there is one near you. The required documents for the extension are an existing valid tourist or residence visa/permit, your passport valid for the duration of the permit applied for plus 60 days beyond that duration, with colour photocopies of the last page of the entry visa and the main page of the passport.


You will also need at least 6 (preferably more) passport-size colour photographs that match the biometric size. With all these documents, you can apply for your extension and, once approved, enjoy your stay in Turkey for a longer period.


In Turkey, all applicants for a residence permit must have valid health insurance. This insurance must cover the applicant for the duration of the residence permit applied for and must be taken out by a Turkish company.


 The insurance must also cover all family members under the age of 65. In addition, the applicant must provide proof of address in Turkey, which can be obtained from the Nufus office of the local government.

You can pay the fees for applying for a residence permit at the offices of the Directorate General of Migration Management (DGMM), at a branch of Halkbank or your local tax office (Vergi Dairesi). You will need your tax number and should quote tax number 9069 when making the payment to ensure that your payment is accepted and registered as an 'Ikamet card' (or Ikamet tax). Once payment has been made, you can proceed with your application for a residence permit.
