To understand the history of Sapanca, we must journey far back in time. After the Phrygians arrived there around 1200 BC, Sapanca became recognised as a residential location. However, it was during the Kingdom of Bithynia, approximately 378 AD, that its residential feature reached its ultimate shape. In a Laz resource from 391, Sapanca was first mentioned as Siphonensis Lacus. It was also known as Sophange, Sophan, and Buanes throughout the Eastern Roman Empire.
